I am thrilled to share the news that the Burchfield Penney Art Center will be recognized at the Museum Association of New York (MANY) 2023 annual conference with an Award of Distinction for “Engaging Communities.”
According to MANY, the award is being given for Burchfield’s work surrounding my LEROI: Living in Color exhibition and “… supporting programming addressing important conversations around themes like identity, social justice, and community.”
The outstanding news about this award is that the student artists, from Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT), Buffalo Public Schools (BPS,) Just Buffalo Literary Center (JBLC,) and Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center who collaborated with me in the exhibition will also be award recipients.
This is one of 14 awards being given by MANY this year in celebration of unique leadership, dedicated community service, transformational visitor experiences, community engagement and innovative programs that use collections to tell stories of New Yorkers.
I cannot imagine a greater thrill than to have this exhibition honored for the collaborative efforts of Burchfield Curator, Tiffany Gaines, the student artists and their lead instructors, Jay Hawkins Sr.(BPS,) Robin Jordan (JBLC,) Kelvin Chazles Klein (BCAT,) and Martina LaVallo (Squeaky Wheel) and myself, which elevated the experience for all who worked on it, and the many who have viewed it.
Thank you Museum Association of New York.
For those interested, the exhibition continues at the Burchfield Penney through March 26. Full details at https://burchfieldpenney.org/.../exhibition:leroi-living.../
